Metropolis Center Moscow
Bliss Fasman Inc., a New York City based lighting design firm addressed to Targetti and Louis Poulsen to supply a relevant part of lighting fixtures for the Metropolis Mixed-Use Center in Moscow, Russia.
Located on Leningradskoye Shosse, this former factory site was transformed into a retail and office complex and was intended as a major focus for an area in need of redevelopment. This 311,000 square meter project included three levels of retail, three office towers, with underground and above grade car parks.
With the design architects, RTKL-UK, Ltd, architect of record Oncoglu, local architect ABD Ltd, landscape architecture firm Lovejoy, and graphic design firm ID8, Bliss Fasman joined the team having a vast background in retail design, office design, and urban mixed-use projects. Bliss Fasman’s responsibilities included all exterior lighting design, and interior design for the common areas of the office and retail components.
The concept of the design was to bring a clean modern look to retail shopping in Moscow, and to provide the same feeling to the office tower lobbies. In retail lighting, it is imperative to maintain the focus on the retail shopfronts, while providing a comfortable and dynamic environment for the shopper. Through the use of direct illumination utilizing Targetti metal halide spotlights and indirect illumination through a combination of uplights including metal halide uplights, fluorescent coves, and cold cathode from other lighting suppliers, Bliss Fasman created a rhythmic design of pools of illumination that led the shopper from store to store without creating an even, bland environment or overpowering the storefronts. With the addition of decorative pendants from Louis Poulsen, among others, a clean modern aesthetic was maintained throughout.
In the large 3rd level Food Court, dynamic lighting was used to create a fun, changing environment for the diners. The central atrium ceiling utilized theatrical projectors with metal halide lamps, cut metal patterns, and dichroic filters to create rich patterning at night. Office lobby designs utilized a combination of metal halide and fluorescent sources from Louis Poulsen and other firms, along with decorative Poulsen pendants to highlight the materials and finishes of this modern office environment. Exterior lighting utilized decorative pole fixtures to create a sense of identity, while LED pavers from Louis Poulsen and linear LED strips brought some interest to the paving. Targetti was involved also for the exterior façade lighting, that Bliss Fasman conceived to emphasize the architectural forms at night, with both metal halide and fluorescent uplighting.
