Targetti at the Symphony Hall

The former Fox Theater, renamed Copley Symphony Hall, a 79-year old gem in downtown San Diego, recently underwent a lighting renewal led by architect David Keitel of domusstudio architecture. The goal was to change the old incandescent lamps to a more energy-efficient source while preserving the architecture and historical luminaires.
Two Targetti products, Minilini LED and Sliver LED were customized to fit into the original luminaires along with the use of color-correcting light gels and dimming controls to simulate the old world feel of incandescent.
The “windows” of the main chandelier, as well as the arched coves around the perimeter of the theater, were retrofitted with Minilini, while smaller pendants in the Angel Walks as well as large ceiling mounted luminaires, sconces, recessed lights and stained glass exit signs were retrofitted with Sliver LED.

According to Keith Kruse of Kruse & Associates, the electrical engineer on the project, the new LED lighting has increased the illumination levels threefold while using only one-third of the energy previously consumed.
OCS Lighting & Control in San Diego managed the submittal process and was instrumental in coordinating details between the design team and the Targetti Poulsen factory.
The project has been featured in Architectural Products magazine, and will appear in the US edition of 2010 Targetti catalog.
