The phenomena of light is extraordinary. The transformation of natural light… the movement… the flux defines time. Without the daily miracle of the sun rising and setting, there would be on indelible indication of time. The passage of light from east to west is a magnificent, absolute constant that we human beings can believe in for it has defined our consciousness. In our work we attempt to celebrate the magnificent intangibility of time and light while questioning our very perception of it. We are exploring the elusive, fleeting spilt second: the instant, the enigma of the infinitesimal moment in which we are alive within the span of eternity – the infinity of Time. Helios presents a parabolic gold reflector which serves to focus, reflect and juxtapose the individual viewer to a single humble candle, the potential source of a single flame. This juxtaposition is fundamental: human to light. If the candle is lit, time is marked as each human being of the fragility of life… of mortality. Potential unfulfilled is suggested by the candle if extinguished, as a reservoir of energy. The parabolic floats on a celestial disc, a corona of infinitesimal points of deep blue light. Below to the right, a small jewel box contains an enigmatic pair of electric bulbs directly facing each other, in one sense cancelling each other although simultaneously forming an infinity. Together having the form of an egg, the lamps gently pulse with deliberate rhythm similar to breathing, evoking potential as well as the certain fragility of life. Human to light defines time as time defines life, yet the enigma of the relative parts inspires continued tension and awe.
